Chapter Sixteen

Payton

MY HEART SKIPPED A BEAT.

Maybe two.

Hell, it might’ve stopped beating altogether when Sebastian whispered those three words. The three words I had never heard from a man’s mouth. Not like this.

My heart expanded in my chest, and a smile quickly followed. “I love you,” I whispered back, the words coming so naturally. I didn’t have to think about it. I’d already known that I had fallen for Sebastian, far sooner than I ever thought I would.

Sebastian cupped my face with his hand as he watched me. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but for the first time, there weren’t any storm clouds gathered in his beautiful gaze. He seemed to be at peace, and I didn’t know if that was because of what I’d said or just the overwhelming feelings that seemed to be coursing between us.

“Hold that thought,” he whispered, smiling before he slipped out of the bed and padded naked to the bathroom. I stared after him, peeking at his incredibly fine back side, admiring the angel wings across his back.

Ironic how he called me angel, yet he seemed to have been sent here for me. I still had a hard time wrapping my mind around all that had happened in the last couple of weeks. Between the dreams that had started, all starring a man I would soon meet, and then to stumble upon him at my boss’s house, my dreams literally coming to life… Sometimes I wondered if it was too good to be true.

Sebastian returned, a washcloth in his hand. My body was so sated I could hardly move. And when he used the warm cloth to clean between my sore thighs, I fought the blush that crept up my neck. He disappeared once more and returned a minute later, sliding into bed beside me, pulling the covers up over us both before spooning behind me.

Neither of us said anything for long minutes, the only sound coming from the ceiling fan spinning up high on the ceiling.

“Is there meaning behind the angel wings?” I asked, placing my arm over his where he was wrapped around me.

“Yeah,” he whispered softly, his breath blowing my hair.

I giggled. “Are you going to tell me what it is?”

“If you ask nicely,” he replied, his arms tightening around me.

“Please?”

“I got the wings as a way to keep myself aware of which direction I needed to go. Without my mother here…”

I squeezed his hand. “Tell me.”

“When my mother died, I had no one. One day she was there, then she was gone. My best friend in the entire world stolen from me. From the minute the police showed up at the apartment, my life changed in every way that mattered.

“After making sure that I knew there were no other options, that he wasn’t choosing me but rather was being saddled with me, Conrad took me in. He didn’t treat me like his son. Hell, I was lucky that he at least treated me like the hired help. And my new instant family couldn’t have cared less who I was or why I was there.
